Which Sikh Guru succeeded Guru Nanak as the second human Guru?

Guru Angad Dev succeeded Guru Nanak as the second human Guru of Sikhism.

Born Lehna in 1504, he became a devoted follower of Guru Nanak after meeting him at Kartarpur. Guru Nanak recognized Lehna’s humility and spiritual discipline, giving him the name Angad, meaning “part of oneself,” and appointing him as his successor in 1539.

Guru Angad is especially associated with standardizing and promoting the Gurmukhi script, which helped preserve and transmit Sikh teachings. He also continued Guru Nanak’s institutions, including the community kitchen and the practice of gathering disciples around the Guru.

A common mix-up is confusing succession with the numbering of the Gurus: Guru Angad was the second human Guru, while Guru Amar Das was the third. Guru Angad served until 1552, when Guru Amar Das succeeded him.
