Which Sikh Guru composed the devotional scripture Sukhmani Sahib?

The story behind the answer

Guru Arjan composed the devotional scripture Sukhmani Sahib.

Sukhmani Sahib, whose title is commonly translated as “Psalm of Peace,” is a major composition in Sikh devotional practice. It appears in the Guru Granth Sahib on pages 262 through 296 in the standard pagination. The work is organized into 24 sections called ashtpadi, with each section containing eight subdivisions.

Guru Arjan, the fifth Sikh Guru, composed Sukhmani Sahib in the early seventeenth century. Its verses discuss meditation on the Divine Name, humility, ethical conduct, truthful living, and the spiritual value of remembering God. The composition is frequently recited individually and in congregational settings.

A common mix-up is to attribute every important Sikh prayer to Guru Nanak, because he composed many foundational hymns. However, Sukhmani Sahib is specifically associated with Guru Arjan. It should also not be confused with Japji Sahib, which opens the Guru Granth Sahib and is attributed to Guru Nanak.
