Which Sikh Guru is credited with standardizing the Gurmukhi script for Sikh scripture?

The story behind the answer

Guru Angad is credited with standardizing the Gurmukhi script for Sikh scripture.

Guru Angad, the second Sikh Guru, adapted an existing script into a clear written form that could represent the language of the Punjab. This helped make religious teachings accessible beyond elite literary circles and supported the preservation of hymns.

The name Gurmukhi means “from the mouth of the Guru.” Guru Angad’s work provided an important foundation for recording the compositions of the Sikh Gurus and other devotional poets. The script later became the principal writing system for Punjabi in Indian Punjab.

Gurmukhi is not the same thing as Punjabi itself: Punjabi is a language, while Gurmukhi is one script used to write it. Shahmukhi, based on Perso-Arabic writing, is widely used for Punjabi in Pakistan.
