Which Sikh Guru compiled the final version of the Guru Granth Sahib?

Guru Gobind Singh compiled the final version of the Guru Granth Sahib.

The scripture’s earlier form, the Adi Granth, was compiled by Guru Arjan in 1604. After the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur, Guru Gobind Singh added his father’s hymns to the scripture at Damdama Sahib, producing the version known as the Damdama Bir. This recension became the basis of the present Guru Granth Sahib.

Guru Gobind Singh also declared that after his death there would be no further human Sikh Gurus. In 1708, he bestowed the status of eternal Guru on the Guru Granth Sahib. Sikhs therefore treat the scripture not merely as a book of teachings but as the living and permanent Guru.

A common mix-up is to credit Guru Gobind Singh with the original compilation. Guru Arjan compiled the first major volume, while Guru Gobind Singh completed the authorized scripture by including Guru Tegh Bahadur’s compositions.
