Anandpur Sahib, in present-day Punjab, was founded by Guru Tegh Bahadur on land purchased near the Sivalik foothills. The settlement became an important center of Sikh history and remains one of the faith’s major pilgrimage sites. Its name means “City of Bliss.”

The town is especially associated with Guru Gobind Singh, who spent much of his life there and founded the Khalsa at nearby Kesgarh Sahib in 1699. Anandpur Sahib later became the setting for major conflicts between the Sikhs and the forces of the Mughal Empire and neighboring hill states.

Anandpur Sahib is sometimes confused with other places carrying the name Sahib. Patna Sahib is associated with Guru Gobind Singh’s birthplace, while Paonta Sahib is linked to his residence in present-day Himachal Pradesh. Damdama Sahib is another recognized Sikh Takht.
