Which short cricket format limits each team to 100 balls?
Answer
100-ball cricket
Answer
100-ball cricket
The short cricket format that limits each team to 100 balls is 100-ball cricket. Each side has one innings, and that innings can contain a maximum of 100 deliveries, making the format shorter than conventional Twenty20 cricket.
The format was developed by the England and Wales Cricket Board for The Hundred, a city-based competition designed to simplify and speed up the game. Professional competition began in England in July 2021, after the concept had been trialled in amateur leagues. Matches generally last about two and a half hours.
Its rules are deliberately distinctive. Bowlers deliver spells of five or 10 balls, the ends change after 10 balls, and each bowler may deliver no more than 20 balls in a match. Each innings also includes a 25-ball powerplay, with restrictions on the number of fielders outside the circle.
The format is easy to confuse with T10 or Twenty20 cricket, but those competitions are defined by overs: 10 overs and 20 overs respectively. In 100-ball cricket, the defining limit is 100 balls per innings, with five-ball overs used in The Hundred.
