It is the ninth and penultimate episode of Game of Thrones season 2, and the 19th episode of the series overall. The episode first aired on May 27, 2012, and focuses entirely on the Battle of the Blackwater, as Stannis Baratheon’s forces attack King’s Landing to claim the Iron Throne.
Tyrion Lannister organizes the city’s defense while serving as acting Hand of the King. His strategy includes wildfire, the volatile green substance that devastates much of Stannis’s attacking fleet. The battle also features major decisions by Cersei Lannister, Sandor Clegane, and Davos Seaworth.
“Blackwater” is often confused with other major battle episodes, especially “The Watchers on the Wall” from season 4 and “Battle of the Bastards” from season 6. Unlike most episodes in the series, it does not move between several storylines: the action remains in and around King’s Landing, giving the battle an unusually concentrated structure.
