Tengwar is the script J.R.R. Tolkien created for writing Quenya and Sindarin.
Tolkien designed Tengwar as an elegant writing system whose letters represent consonants and whose vowel marks are placed around them. In the fictional history of Middle-earth, the script was devised by Fëanor and later adapted for several languages. Tolkien used it for inscriptions, manuscripts, and decorative writing connected with his stories.
Tengwar is often confused with Cirth, another Tolkien script. Cirth is associated especially with angular runes and was used by the Dwarves, while Tengwar is the flowing script familiar from many editions and adaptations. Tolkien’s own calligraphic examples helped make the script recognizable even to readers who did not know the fictional languages.
