What is the name of the hobbit played by Martin Freeman in Peter Jackson’s film trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit?

The story behind the answer

Martin Freeman played Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s film trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

Bilbo is the central character of Tolkien’s 1937 novel. He begins as a comfort-loving hobbit in Bag End, but Gandalf and Thorin Oakenshield’s company draw him into a journey to the Lonely Mountain. During the adventure, Bilbo encounters Gollum and finds the Ring in the goblin tunnels.

Peter Jackson’s adaptation was released as three films: An Unexpected Journey in 2012, The Desolation of Smaug in 2013, and The Battle of the Five Armies in 2014. Freeman portrays Bilbo throughout the trilogy, while Ian Holm appears as an older Bilbo in framing scenes.

Bilbo is often confused with Frodo Baggins, who is the principal Ring-bearer in The Lord of the Rings. Bilbo is Frodo’s older cousin and guardian, and he originally obtained the Ring before giving it to Frodo.
