Quenya is Tolkien’s Elvish language spoken by the Elves of Valinor and known as High-elven.
Tolkien developed Quenya as one of the major languages of his legendarium. It was inspired in part by the sound and structure of Finnish, while its vocabulary and grammar were shaped into a distinct fictional language. In the mythology, Quenya was associated especially with the Noldor and other Elves connected with Aman.
Quenya appears in names, poems, songs, and formal expressions throughout Tolkien’s writings. “Namárië,” Galadriel’s lament in The Lord of the Rings, is one of the best-known substantial examples of Quenya in the published narrative.
Sindarin is the other major Elvish language readers often encounter. It was more widely spoken in Middle-earth during the Third Age, whereas Quenya had a more elevated or ceremonial status. Khuzdul is the secret language of the Dwarves, and Adûnaic was associated with the Númenóreans.
