The Macallan is the Scottish whisky distillery that produces The Macallan single malt on the Easter Elchies estate.
The distillery stands near Craigellachie in Moray, in Scotland’s Speyside region. It was founded in 1824, when Alexander Reid obtained a legal licence to distil. The name comes from the surrounding estate, which is associated with the medieval church of Eelan Mor.
The Macallan is particularly associated with maturation in sherry-seasoned oak casks. Its core releases commonly emphasize flavours such as dried fruit, spice, and oak, although the character varies with cask type, age, and bottling.
A common mix-up is confusing the distillery with Speyside neighbours such as The Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, and Aberlour. Those are separate distilleries with their own brands and production histories.
