The Scottish range that includes Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, is the Grampian Mountains.

Ben Nevis rises to about 1,345 metres at the western end of the Grampian range, near Fort William in Lochaber. The Grampians are one of Scotland’s three principal mountain regions, alongside the Northwest Highlands and the Southern Uplands, and contain many of Britain’s tallest peaks.

The name can cause confusion because “Grampians” is sometimes used narrowly or broadly. In some geographical descriptions, subranges such as the Cairngorms are treated separately; in others, they are included within the wider Grampian system. That variation does not affect Ben Nevis’s usual classification.

Ben Nevis was first climbed in 1771 and later had a staffed observatory on its summit from 1883 to 1904. Its ruined observatory and severe weather are reminders that Britain’s highest peak is a serious mountain, not merely a high hill.
