This heavily glaciated range occupies the southwestern part of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego and lies entirely within Chile. It is the southernmost portion of the Andes, extending broadly from the vicinity of Monte Sarmiento and the Magdalena Channel toward the Yendegaia Valley. The Almirantazgo Fjord borders it to the north, while the Beagle Channel lies to the south.

The range’s ice field covers more than 2,300 square kilometres, giving the landscape its characteristic combination of sharp peaks, glaciers, fjords and deep valleys. Several summits rise above 2,000 metres, but Monte Shipton is identified as the range’s highest point.

Its name honours Charles Darwin, whose voyage aboard HMS Beagle brought scientific attention to Tierra del Fuego. The range is a defining feature of Alberto de Agostini National Park. Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Huayhuash are Peruvian ranges, while Cordillera Paine is associated with Patagonia’s Torres del Paine region, not this Tierra del Fuego range.
