Which North Carolina mountain range has Mount Mitchell as its highest peak?

The North Carolina mountain range whose highest peak is Mount Mitchell is the Black Mountains. The range forms part of the Blue Ridge Province of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and contains the highest summit in the eastern United States.

Mount Mitchell rises to 6,684 feet (2,037 meters) in Yancey County, northeast of Asheville. Much of the summit area is protected by Mount Mitchell State Park, while surrounding land lies in Pisgah National Forest. The range’s dark appearance, especially at higher elevations, comes from forests of red spruce and Fraser fir.

The peak was named for Elisha Mitchell, a University of North Carolina professor who surveyed the region in the nineteenth century. Earlier, the summit was known as Black Dome. Mitchell’s measurements helped establish that the Black Mountains stood higher than Mount Washington, then widely considered the East’s highest point.

The Blue Ridge Mountains are the broader parent range, so they are an understandable but less precise choice. The Great Smoky Mountains and Balsam Mountains are separate ranges in the southern Appalachians.
