Answer
San Cristóbal Hill
Which Santiago hill has a summit sanctuary with a large statue of the Virgin Mary? San Cristóbal Hill does.
Known in Spanish as Cerro San Cristóbal, the hill rises in northern Santiago and reaches about 880 meters above sea level. Its summit holds the Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception, crowned by a large statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The statue itself is 14 meters tall, standing on an 8.3-meter pedestal.
The shrine’s first stone was placed on December 8, 1904, and it was officially inaugurated in 1908. The statue was made in France and is associated with the “Virgin of Rome.” Pope John Paul II visited the site on April 1, 1987, praying in the small chapel inside the pedestal and blessing Santiago.
A common mix-up is Santa Lucía Hill, another famous Santiago landmark. Santa Lucía is a historic urban hill with fortifications and gardens, but the prominent Marian sanctuary and statue belong to San Cristóbal. The hill is also part of Santiago Metropolitan Park and can be reached by foot, funicular, road, or cable car.
