Which Russian peninsula projects into the Kara Sea and is known for reindeer herding?

The story behind the answer

The Yamal Peninsula projects northward into the Kara Sea and is known for reindeer herding.

Yamal is in northwestern Siberia, within Russia’s Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. Its name comes from the Nenets language and is commonly translated as “end of the world.” The peninsula is a low, tundra-covered region extending between the Ob Bay and the Baydaratskaya Bay.

The Nenets have practiced large-scale reindeer herding across Yamal for centuries. Seasonal migrations follow traditional routes across the tundra, making the peninsula one of the world’s most important remaining areas of nomadic reindeer culture.

Yamal also has enormous natural-gas reserves. The Bovanenkovo gas field and the Yamal LNG project have made the wider region strategically important to Russia’s energy industry. Yamal is not the same as the nearby Gydan Peninsula, which lies farther east across the Ob Gulf and Taz Estuary region.
