Which English peninsula includes Lizard Point, the southernmost point of mainland Great Britain?
Answer
The Lizard Peninsula
Answer
The Lizard Peninsula
The Lizard Peninsula includes Lizard Point, the southernmost point of mainland Great Britain.
The Lizard lies in Cornwall and projects south into the English Channel. Its coastline is known for cliffs, coves, heathland and unusual rocks formed from ancient oceanic crust and mantle. The peninsula’s serpentine rock is especially distinctive and gave its name to the local geological landscape.
Lizard Point is near the village of Lizard and has long been important to coastal navigation. The nearby Lizard Lighthouse was established in 1752, helping ships avoid the hazardous reefs and headlands around southern Cornwall. The area is also associated with rare plants adapted to its mineral-rich soils.
The Lizard Peninsula is not the same as the wider Cornish Peninsula, which refers broadly to Cornwall’s entire southwestern projection. “The Lizard” specifically describes the southern promontory and surrounding peninsula.
