Which Russian peninsula lies between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov?
Answer
Taman Peninsula
Answer
Taman Peninsula
The Taman Peninsula is the Russian peninsula lying between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
It forms the western part of Krasnodar Krai and is connected to the Kerch Peninsula across the Kerch Strait. The region consists largely of lowlands, lagoons, mud volcanoes, and estuaries rather than a single high mountain chain. Its position gives it coastlines on both the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
In antiquity, Greek colonies were established along the nearby shores. The ancient settlement of Phanagoria stood in the area and became one of the most important Greek colonies on the Taman coast. Later, the peninsula formed part of the historical landscapes of Circassia and the Kuban.
The Taman Peninsula is often confused with the Kerch Peninsula, which is across the Kerch Strait in Crimea. They are neighboring but separate landforms. The Taman region is also known for viticulture and fertile agricultural areas.
