Which royal residence is located near Nuku'alofa?

The story behind the answer

The royal residence located near Nuku'alofa is the Royal Palace of Tonga.

The palace stands in the northwest of Tonga’s capital, close to the Pacific Ocean and easily visible from the waterfront. It is the official residence of the King of Tonga, making it one of Nuku'alofa’s best-known landmarks even though visitors cannot normally enter the building.

The present wooden palace was built in 1867, during the period when Tonga was consolidating its central monarchy. Nuku'alofa later became the constitutional capital in 1875, placing the royal residence within the kingdom’s principal political and ceremonial setting.

Tongan tradition often avoids referring to the palace directly out of respect for the royal family. Poetic or symbolic expressions include Fanga-tapu, Loto-ā and Ā-maka. Tonga also has other royal residences, including palaces on Fua'amotu and several outer islands, but the waterfront building near the capital is the Royal Palace of Tonga.
