Rocky won the Oscar for Best Picture. The 1976 underdog drama took the top prize at the 49th Academy Awards, where producers Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler accepted the award for the film.
The victory capped an extraordinary awards run for a modestly budgeted boxing movie centered on Rocky Balboa, a Philadelphia club fighter given one unexpected chance at the world heavyweight title. The film also won Oscars for John G. Avildsen’s direction and film editing, while receiving seven additional nominations.
The other choices are sequels or a spin-off: Rocky II continued Rocky’s story, Rocky Balboa returned to the character decades later, and Creed shifted attention toward Apollo Creed’s son, Adonis. None won Best Picture. Rocky remains the only film in the franchise to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
