Rocky IV holds the highest worldwide box office among the original Rocky films. Released in 1985, it earned approximately $300.5 million worldwide, surpassing the earlier entries in the series.
The film’s commercial success was driven by its large-scale Cold War storyline, energetic training montages and highly recognizable opponent, the Soviet boxer Ivan Drago, played by Dolph Lundgren. Rocky faces Drago after Drago fatally injures Apollo Creed in an exhibition match. The climactic bout takes place in Moscow, turning Rocky’s personal fight into a symbolic confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union.
Rocky IV was written and directed by Sylvester Stallone, who also starred as Rocky. It became the third-highest-grossing U.S. film of 1985 and one of the most commercially successful sports films ever made at the time.
A frequent confusion comes from Rocky III, which had previously become the franchise’s top-grossing film after earning about $270 million worldwide. Creed and its sequels belong to a related spin-off series, so they are not part of the original Rocky-film comparison.
