Which river runs through Lima before emptying into the Pacific Ocean?

The story behind the answer

The Rímac River runs through Lima before emptying into the Pacific Ocean.

The river rises in Peru’s western highlands, in Huarochirí Province, and runs about 204 kilometres toward the coast. Its mouth is in Callao, near Jorge Chávez International Airport, after the river passes through the Lima metropolitan area. It is one of the three principal rivers associated with the Lima region, alongside the Chillón and Lurín.

The Rímac is especially important because it supplies much of the potable water used by Lima and Callao. Its name comes from the Quechua word rimaq, meaning “speaker” or “speaking,” giving it the traditional nickname El Río Hablador, or “the talking river.” A common mix-up is to identify the Suriname River, which belongs to Paramaribo, or the Mapocho River, which flows through Santiago, Chile.
