Which river flows beside Paramaribo before reaching the Atlantic Ocean?
Answer
Suriname River
Answer
Suriname River
The Suriname River flows beside Paramaribo before reaching the Atlantic Ocean.
About 480 kilometres long, it begins in the Guiana Highlands and travels north through Suriname. The river passes Paramaribo on its left bank, with Meerzorg on the right, then meets the Commewijne River near Nieuw-Amsterdam. From there it reaches the Atlantic at the sandspit of Braamspunt.
The river is central to Suriname’s economy and transport. Ships use it to carry bauxite and alumina exports and to bring essential imported materials into the country’s ports. The Afobaka Dam and the Brokopondo Reservoir interrupt its course and effectively divide it into upper and lower sections. A frequent mix-up is the Essequibo River, which is Guyana’s major river, or the Demerara River, which also lies in Guyana.
