Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire are set in the Hoenn region.
Hoenn is the setting for the third generation of main-series Pokémon games. Ruby and Sapphire were released for the Game Boy Advance in Japan on November 21, 2002, and introduced 135 new Pokémon, along with features such as abilities, double battles and Pokémon Contests.
The region’s geography was inspired by Kyushu, one of Japan’s main islands, although Hoenn was rotated for gameplay design. It contains many islands, extensive ocean routes and locations connected by water, giving the games a noticeably different landscape from Kanto and Johto.
Ruby centers on Team Magma and Groudon, while Sapphire centers on Team Aqua and Kyogre. Their opposing goals involve changing the balance between land and sea. Pokémon Emerald later revisited Hoenn with Rayquaza playing a larger role in the story.
