Which Pokémon region is based on Japan’s Hokkaido island?

The story behind the answer

Sinnoh is the Pokémon region based on Japan’s Hokkaido island.

Sinnoh is the setting for Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, which were released for the Nintendo DS. Its geography reflects Hokkaido’s northern position through snowy routes, mountainous terrain, and a cooler visual atmosphere than many earlier regions.

Mount Coronet divides Sinnoh into eastern and western areas, while three major lakes—Verity, Valor, and Acuity—are important locations in the games’ story. The region also includes the Battle Zone, an area reached after the main adventure.

Sinnoh is sometimes confused with Johto, which draws inspiration from Japan’s Kansai region, or Hoenn, which is based largely on Kyushu and nearby islands. The name “Sinnoh” is used in the modern games, while the region’s ancient form is called Hisui in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
