Which record label signed The Doors in 1966?
Answer
Elektra Records
Answer
Elektra Records
The Doors were signed in 1966 by Elektra Records.
Elektra president Jac Holzman saw the band at the Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles on 10 August 1966, after being encouraged to check them out by Arthur Lee of the Elektra act Love. Holzman and producer Paul A. Rothchild attended further performances before signing The Doors to Elektra on 18 August.
The deal followed a short-lived connection with Columbia Records. The Doors had initially been under a six-month Columbia contract, but the label failed to secure a producer and placed the group on its drop list. That earlier association is the main reason Columbia can be a tempting but incorrect answer.
Elektra’s partnership with the band quickly paid off. The Doors recorded their self-titled debut at Sunset Sound in August 1966, and Elektra released it on 4 January 1967. It contained “Light My Fire,” which became the label’s first single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
