Also called the Scandes, the range follows much of the Scandinavian Peninsula and extends into northwestern Finland. In the north, it forms a broad section of the Norway–Sweden border. Its western slopes descend sharply toward the Norwegian and North seas, where glacial erosion created Norway’s famous fjords; toward Sweden, the terrain generally falls more gradually.

Galdhøpiggen stands at 2,469 metres in Jotunheimen, southern Norway, and is the highest mountain in Norway, Scandinavia, and mainland Northern Europe. Kebnekaise is the highest peak on the Swedish side. The range is geologically old in origin but has relatively high, steep relief because uplift and repeated Ice Age glaciation shaped its modern landscapes. The Ural Mountains, by contrast, divide parts of Europe and Asia much farther east.
