Which publisher released Winnie-the-Pooh in the United States in 1926?

The story behind the answer

E. P. Dutton released Winnie-the-Pooh in the United States in 1926.

A. A. Milne’s first Pooh story collection was published in England by Methuen on 14 October 1926. The American edition was issued by E. P. Dutton, while McClelland & Stewart handled the Canadian edition. These different publishers can make bibliographic questions about the first edition surprisingly easy to mix up.

The book was an immediate commercial success. It collected stories about Pooh, Christopher Robin, Piglet, Eeyore, Owl, Rabbit, Kanga and Roo, with illustrations by E. H. Shepard. The success of the first volume led to the 1928 sequel, The House at Pooh Corner.

The United States edition also matters for copyright history. Because the book was first published in 1926, its U.S. copyright term ended after 95 years, and the work entered the American public domain on 1 January 2022. That status does not automatically apply to every later adaptation or illustration.
