Coventry City’s 2026–27 Premier League return followed the longest absence from the top flight among the promoted clubs.
Coventry had been away from the Premier League for 25 years before returning for the 2026–27 season. Their promotion placed them in the opening match at Arsenal on Friday 21 August, giving the comeback an immediate high-profile setting.
The other promoted clubs had shorter gaps. Ipswich Town returned after one season away, while Hull City came back after nine years. Coventry’s 25-year interval was therefore the longest absence for a former Premier League club in the Premier League era at that point.
The club’s return also carried historical resonance. Coventry’s only previous opening-weekend away trip to Arsenal had produced a 3–0 victory in August 1993, with Micky Quinn scoring a hat-trick at Highbury. The 2026 fixture reunited the clubs after more than three decades.
