Coventry City was scheduled to visit Arsenal on the first day of the 2026–27 Premier League season.
The fixture was actually played at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium on Friday, 21 August 2026, so Coventry were the visiting side and Arsenal were at home. The match launched the entire Premier League campaign.
Coventry’s promotion was especially notable because the club had been away from the Premier League for 25 years. Their return followed a successful Championship campaign and placed them directly against the reigning champions in the opening fixture.
Arsenal had won the previous Premier League title, ending Manchester City’s run at the top and beginning the season as defending champions. The other newly promoted clubs, Ipswich Town and Hull City, had different opening assignments: Ipswich hosted Sunderland, while Hull City hosted Manchester United.
