Coventry City was the promoted club absent from the 2026–27 Premier League opening-round winners.
Coventry returned to the Premier League after a 25-year absence, the longest gap among the promoted teams. Their first match was particularly demanding: they faced defending champions Arsenal away at Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal won the opener 3–0, leaving Coventry without points after the first round. By contrast, the other two promoted clubs both won: Hull City defeated Manchester United 2–0 and Ipswich Town beat Sunderland 2–1.
That meant two of the three promoted sides won on opening weekend. It was reported as only the fourth time in Premier League history that two newly promoted teams had won their opening fixtures.
