Ipswich Town scored twice in a 2–1 win over Sunderland during the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
The match was played on Saturday, 22 August 2026, at Portman Road. Ipswich were one of three promoted clubs beginning the season in the Premier League, having returned to the top flight after a one-year absence. Their opening victory gave them an immediate three points.
Sunderland also entered the division as a promoted side, making this a meeting between two newly elevated clubs. Ipswich’s 2–1 win was the only opening-weekend match involving two promoted teams, while Hull City faced Manchester United and Coventry City faced defending champions Arsenal.
The result was narrower than Hull City’s 2–0 victory over Manchester United but more productive than the clean-sheet wins recorded by Arsenal, Everton, and Brentford. Ipswich’s win also meant Sunderland began their return with a defeat.
