Coventry City returned to the Premier League after 25 years and opened the 2026–27 season against Arsenal.
Coventry’s first match was away to the defending champions at Emirates Stadium on Friday 21 August 2026. Arsenal won 3–0, but the fixture marked Coventry’s return to the English top flight after a quarter-century away.
The other promoted clubs had different opening assignments. Ipswich Town hosted Sunderland, while Hull City hosted Manchester United. Those fixtures also involved returning or newly promoted teams, which is why the clubs are sometimes mixed up.
Coventry’s return was one of the defining background stories of the opening round. The club’s long absence made its immediate meeting with the reigning champions especially notable, even though Arsenal controlled the result.
