Hull City recorded the highest opening-round victory among the three 2026–27 Premier League newcomers.
Hull City defeated Manchester United 2–0 at home on Saturday, 22 August 2026. The two-goal margin was larger than Ipswich Town’s 2–1 win over Sunderland and Coventry City’s 3–0 defeat by Arsenal.
Hull’s victory was notable because it came against one of England’s most globally recognized clubs. The match was also the first Saturday lunchtime fixture of the season, beginning at 12:30 in the United Kingdom.
Hull were returning to the Premier League after a nine-year absence. Ipswich had returned after one year away, while Coventry’s promotion ended a 25-year wait. All three promoted clubs therefore appeared in the opening round.
