Hull City recorded the first opening-weekend win among the 2026–27 Premier League newcomers.
Hull defeated Manchester United 2–0 on Saturday, 22 August 2026, making them the first promoted club to win during the opening round. Their match followed Arsenal’s 3–0 victory over Coventry City on Friday, meaning Coventry were the first promoted side to play but not the first to win.
Ipswich Town also won during the round, beating Sunderland 2–1 later on Saturday. Coventry lost their opener, while Hull and Ipswich both collected three points. This makes the wording “first opening-weekend win” important: it refers to the order of results, not simply which promoted side finished highest in the table.
Hull had returned to the Premier League after a nine-year absence. Coventry’s return was longer, at 25 years, while Ipswich returned after one year away. The three clubs therefore arrived in the division with very different promotion histories.
