Ipswich Town hosted Sunderland in the 2026–27 Premier League opening round.
The match was played at Portman Road on Saturday 22 August 2026. Ipswich won 2–1, giving the club three points in its first Premier League match of the campaign.
Ipswich were one of three promoted teams entering the division. The other two were Coventry City and Hull City, but their opening fixtures were different: Coventry visited Arsenal, while Hull hosted Manchester United.
The fixture also marked Ipswich’s return to the Premier League after a one-year absence. That detail can cause confusion with Coventry’s much longer 25-year gap and Hull’s nine-year absence.
