Which promoted club had been absent from the Premier League for 25 years before the 2026–27 opening weekend?

The story behind the answer

Coventry City had been absent from the Premier League for 25 years before the 2026–27 opening weekend.

Coventry returned to the top flight for the 2026–27 season after a quarter-century away. Their comeback began with an opening-night visit to defending champions Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Friday 21 August 2026.

The other promoted teams had much shorter gaps. Ipswich Town returned after one year away, while Hull City returned after nine years. Coventry’s 25-year interval was therefore the longest among the three promoted clubs and one of the defining background facts of the opening round.

Coventry’s previous Premier League period ended in the late 1990s, after which the club spent years in the Football League’s lower divisions. Promotion restored them to England’s top tier and placed them immediately into one of the season’s most visible fixtures. The match also gave the opening weekend a direct contrast between the reigning champions and a club completing one of English football’s longest recent top-flight returns.
