Which promoted club conceded the first goal of the 2026–27 Premier League season?

The story behind the answer

Coventry City conceded the first goal of the 2026–27 Premier League season.

Coventry’s match against Arsenal was the campaign’s opening fixture, played on Friday, 21 August 2026. Arsenal eventually won 3–0, so Coventry were the first promoted side to concede in the new season and the first team to fall behind in a competitive league match.

Hull City and Ipswich Town both played on the following day. Hull defeated Manchester United 2–0, while Ipswich beat Sunderland 2–1. Because both clubs won, neither conceded the first goal of the season before Coventry’s match had concluded.

This fact is sometimes muddled with the first goal scored by a promoted club. Ipswich’s Emersonn opened the scoring in his team’s match, and Hull’s Semi Ajayi scored first for Hull. Those were later opening goals; the first goal of the entire league season came in Arsenal’s victory over Coventry.
