Which producer worked with Metallica for the first time on The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

Bob Rock worked with Metallica for the first time as producer on The Black Album.

Before joining the project, Rock had produced or engineered records for artists including Mötley Crüe, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, and the Cult. Metallica hired him after hearing his work and wanting a different production approach following ...And Justice for All.

Rock pushed the band toward recording as a unit rather than assembling every performance separately. He also challenged the musicians to simplify some arrangements and focus on impact. Those choices helped produce the album’s large drum sound, layered guitars, and clearer low end.

The collaboration became controversial inside the band because the recording process was demanding and disagreements were frequent. Nevertheless, the resulting record became a commercial and cultural breakthrough. Rock remained associated with Metallica for several later projects, making his first Black Album collaboration a major turning point rather than a one-off credit.
