Which presidential palace of Peru stands on Lima's Plaza Mayor?
Answer
Government Palace of Peru
Answer
Government Palace of Peru
The Government Palace of Peru stands on the northern side of Lima’s Plaza Mayor.
Also called Palacio de Gobierno or the House of Pizarro, the building is the seat of Peru’s executive branch and the president’s official residence. Its site has much older roots: before the Spanish conquest, a large huaca associated with Taulichusco, the last kuraka, or Indigenous governor, stood there.
Francisco Pizarro built the first palace on the site in the 1530s. It later became the residence of the viceroys of Peru after the Viceroyalty was established in 1542. Fires and earthquakes repeatedly damaged the complex, and the present building largely emerged from reconstruction work in the 1920s and 1930s. The Polish architect Ricardo de Jaxa Malachowski designed its distinctive Plaza Mayor façade. It is commonly confused with Lima’s Municipal Palace or Archbishop’s Palace, which also border the square.
