Which PlayStation handheld was the first to use an OLED display?

The story behind the answer

The PlayStation Vita was the first PlayStation handheld to use an OLED display.

The original PlayStation Vita model, designated PCH-1000, launched in Japan in 2011 and used a 5-inch OLED touchscreen. OLED technology allowed each pixel to emit its own light, producing strong contrast and deep blacks without a separate backlight.

Sony later released a slimmer PCH-2000 revision with a 5-inch LCD display instead of OLED. As a result, references that simply say “the Vita had an OLED screen” are describing the original model, not every Vita unit.

The Vita also introduced dual analog sticks to Sony’s handheld line, along with front and rear touch interfaces. It used proprietary flash-based game cards rather than the Universal Media Disc format used by the PlayStation Portable.
