How many CPU cores does the PlayStation 5’s AMD Zen 2 processor have?

The story behind the answer

The PlayStation 5’s custom AMD Zen 2 central processor has eight cores. It is paired with a custom AMD RDNA 2-based graphics processor and forms the main computing platform of Sony’s ninth-generation console.

The PS5’s CPU is designed for substantially higher performance than the Jaguar-based processor in the PlayStation 4 family. The Zen 2 architecture and higher clock speed help the console handle game simulation, operating-system tasks, and data streaming alongside graphics work.

Eight CPU cores does not mean that every game uses all cores identically. Developers distribute workloads according to each title’s engine, while some processing capacity is reserved for system functions.

The PlayStation 5 also includes a custom solid-state drive and dedicated hardware for data compression and decompression. Those features work with the CPU and GPU to reduce loading times and support more detailed game worlds.
