The first PlayStation Portable hardware version was officially designated PSP-1000. It is also commonly called the original PSP or the PSP-1000 series.
Sony released this model in Japan in December 2004, followed by North America and Europe in 2005. The handheld used Universal Media Discs for games and movies, supported Memory Stick storage, and featured a wide 4.3-inch display. Its design positioned it as a portable extension of the PlayStation brand rather than a smaller version of a home console.
Later revisions changed the model numbering. The PSP-2000 was thinner and lighter, the PSP-3000 added an improved display and microphone, and the PSP-N1000, known as PSP Go, used a sliding design and digital distribution. Those revisions should not be confused with the original PSP-1000.
