Which PlayStation console was the first to support 3D Blu-ray movies?

The story behind the answer

The PlayStation 3 was the first PlayStation console to support 3D Blu-ray movies.

A firmware update added stereoscopic 3D support to the PlayStation 3 in 2010. With a compatible 3D television and suitable glasses, the console could play 3D Blu-ray films and support stereoscopic 3D games. This feature expanded the role of the PS3 beyond ordinary high-definition playback.

The console already included a Blu-ray Disc drive at launch, which gave it the hardware foundation for high-capacity movie media. Support for 3D content came later through system software rather than through a separate console generation.

This fact is distinct from simply asking which PlayStation first used Blu-ray for games: the PlayStation 3 also pioneered Blu-ray movie playback within Sony’s console line. The feature depended on compatible display equipment and properly authored 3D content.
