Which PlayStation console was the first to include a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive?

The story behind the answer

The PlayStation 5 was the first PlayStation console to include a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive.

Sony released the standard PlayStation 5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray optical drive in November 2020. The drive can read 4K UHD Blu-ray movie discs, as well as ordinary Blu-ray and DVD media. This made the PS5 the first PlayStation system to support the newer 4K optical movie format through built-in hardware.

The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition does not contain an optical drive, so it cannot play physical discs unless paired with a compatible detachable drive on supported models. The PlayStation 4 Pro could output games and video to a 4K display, but it retained a conventional Blu-ray drive and did not play 4K UHD Blu-ray discs.

The PS5 also introduced a custom solid-state drive, faster loading, and hardware-based ray tracing. Its physical-game format remained Ultra HD Blu-ray, while digital games were downloaded through the PlayStation Store.
