Which PlayStation console was Sony’s first home system to use CD-ROM game discs?

The story behind the answer

The original PlayStation was Sony’s first home system to use CD-ROM game discs.

Sony’s console launched in Japan in 1994 with games distributed on compact discs rather than cartridges. This gave publishers substantially more storage for music, speech, video, and larger game worlds, while also reducing manufacturing costs compared with many cartridge-based systems of the era.

The PlayStation’s optical format is sometimes mixed up with the PlayStation 2’s DVD format or the PlayStation 3’s Blu-ray format. The original system’s CD-ROM drive could also play standard audio CDs, although it was designed primarily for games. Later PlayStation consoles continued Sony’s use of optical media before increasingly adopting digital downloads and internal storage.
