Which PlayStation 4 model was the first Sony console to support 4K gaming?

The story behind the answer

The PlayStation 4 Pro was Sony’s first PlayStation console to support 4K gaming output.

Sony announced the PlayStation 4 Pro in September 2016 and released it on November 10, 2016. It used a faster graphics processor and higher clock speeds than the original PlayStation 4, allowing selected games to render at higher resolutions or use enhanced graphical effects.

“4K gaming” did not mean that every Pro game rendered at native 4K. Developers chose how to use the additional performance, and some titles used checkerboard rendering, dynamic resolution, or improved frame rates. The Pro also supported 4K video streaming and HDR output.

The PlayStation 4 Slim was a smaller replacement for the standard PS4, but it did not provide the Pro’s enhanced gaming performance. The PlayStation 5 arrived later and belongs to a new console generation.
