Which player won the first PDC World Darts Championship in 1994?

The story behind the answer

Dennis Priestley won the first PDC World Darts Championship in 1994.

The tournament was originally known as the WDC World Darts Championship. Priestley defeated Phil Taylor in the final at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet, England, establishing the first champion of the organization that became the Professional Darts Corporation.

The event followed a split in professional darts during the early 1990s. A group of leading players formed the World Darts Council, later renamed the PDC, while the British Darts Organisation continued to run its own world championship. As a result, “first world champion” can refer to different championships unless the organization is named.

Priestley was already a major champion before the PDC event, having won the BDO World Championship in 1991. Taylor later became the tournament’s defining champion, but he did not win the inaugural PDC edition; Priestley took that title.
