Who won the first PDC Players Championship Finals in 2009?

The story behind the answer

Phil Taylor won the first PDC Players Championship Finals in 2009.

Taylor defeated Robert Thornton 13–11 in the inaugural final at Circus Tavern in Purfleet. The event brought together leading performers from the year’s Players Championship floor tournaments, creating a season-ending championship for that circuit.

Players Championship events are ranking tournaments held away from the large televised stages. They give professional players repeated opportunities to earn prize money and ranking points, while the finals reward the strongest performers across the series.

The competition was originally known as the Players Championship Finals. It later became associated with Minehead, where the tournament developed into a regular part of the PDC calendar. Taylor’s first title made him the inaugural name on its winners’ list.
