Which darts player won the first World Series of Darts Finals in 2015?

The story behind the answer

Michael van Gerwen won the first World Series of Darts Finals in 2015.

The inaugural tournament was held at the Sachsen Arena in Vienna, Austria. Van Gerwen defeated Michael Smith 11–10 in the final, winning a closely fought deciding leg and becoming the first champion of the event.

The World Series of Darts Finals was created as the concluding championship for the PDC’s international World Series events. Those events take leading professional players to locations outside the traditional British and European circuit, helping promote darts in new markets and giving local qualifiers opportunities to face established stars.

Van Gerwen was already one of the sport’s leading players by 2015. His victory added another major title to a career that included world championships, Premier League wins and multiple European honours. The final’s 11–10 score remains one of the competition’s closest possible title finishes.
